Teaching Opportunities / Oportunidades de Ensenar
Job Description
International teachers teach grade-level classes from 1st to 7th grade. (There may also be an opportunity to work in the pre-school.) English is the language of instruction for all subjects except Spanish and social studies. Because of the range of English proficiency levels among students, teachers with ESL/EFL experience are encouraged to apply. Some knowledge of Spanish (or a willingness to learn) is helpful for communication with students, parents and fellow teachers.
Unlike the local public schools, AIC offers full-day instruction (from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM). The school is relatively well resourced, but obtaining teaching materials and services such as photocopying and Internet connectivity can be challenging. The AIC respects and follows curriculum guidelines for the Dominican Republic, but draws heavily from various state curricula in the United States. Teachers are encouraged to use creative instructional methods that meet curricular standards while integrating various core subjects in larger projects.

Teachers and administrators are paid around $500/month – enough to live comfortably in Cabrera. The school’s Board is working to secure housing allowances for foreign teachers, but this is not yet an official part of the compensation package. Unfortunately, travel expenses to and from the DR cannot be covered.
